Cusco Peru
Overview
Cusco, at 3,400 metres in the Andes, was the capital of the Inca Empire. Colonial churches built on Inca stonework, narrow lanes, markets and the gateway to the Sacred Valley make it the starting point for the journey to Machu Picchu. The altitude means you should take it slowly for the first days.
Getting around
The centre is walkable and taxis are cheap for short hops. Minibuses (combis) and tour buses run to the Sacred Valley, and trains to Machu Picchu leave from Ollantaytambo. Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport is about 15 minutes from the centre.
Where to stay
- Plaza de Armas – The cathedral and the heart of Cusco, packed with restaurants and tour offices.
- San Blas – A bohemian quarter of artisan workshops, cafes and steep lanes with views.
- San Pedro – A lively local district with the market and a train station.
- Santa Ana – A quieter hillside area with local eateries and affordable stays.

Food & Drink
Cusco's cuisine pairs Andean staples such as potatoes, corn, quinoa and cuy with modern chef touches. Markets offer cheap local meals, while the centre has award-winning restaurants.
Museums
Cusco's museums tell the Inca and colonial stories on the same streets. Most are small and central, so you can visit several in one day.
Hiking
Hikes around Cusco run through Inca ruins, high lakes and Andean valleys. Because you start at 3,400 metres, even easy routes can be tiring, so acclimatise for a few days first.
Extreme Sports
The Cusco area offers dramatic Andean terrain for rafting, paragliding, biking and climbing. All of it happens at altitude, so choose a licensed operator and acclimatise first.
Culture
In Cusco, Inca stonework and Catholic churches are intertwined, and Quechua traditions are still alive. Festivals, dances and rituals fill the streets throughout the year.
