Bangkok Thailand
Overview
Bangkok is Thailand's buzzing capital, where gilded temples, canals, street food and nightlife live side by side. Palaces and temples fill Rattanakosin, the Chao Phraya offers river views, and Sukhumvit and Siam bring shopping and modern city life. The most comfortable season in the hot, humid climate is November to February.
Getting around
The BTS Skytrain, MRT metro and Airport Rail Link are the fastest ways to beat traffic; use a Rabbit card or contactless payment. Chao Phraya express boats, tuk-tuks, Grab and taxis are also common; insist on the meter in taxis.
Where to stay
- Rattanakosin (Old City) – The historic core with the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun and other main monuments.
- Yaowarat (Chinatown) – Chinatown, overflowing at night with street food, gold shops and temples.
- Siam and Pathumwan – The modern hub of giant malls, art galleries and the Jim Thompson House.
- Sukhumvit – The boulevard where most foreign visitors stay, with restaurants, bars and the BTS line.
- Thonburi and the Khlongs – West of the river, with canals, wooden houses and a calmer everyday life.

Food & Drink
Bangkok's cuisine balances sweet, sour, salty and spicy in one dish, and the best food is on the streets and in markets. From Pad Thai and boat noodles on plastic stools to a Michelin-starred omelette, there is something for every budget.
Museums
Bangkok's museums cover Siamese royal history, traditional Thai houses and contemporary art. Their air-conditioned halls are also a good break from the heat between temple visits.
Hiking
Hiking in Bangkok means parks, mangrove boardwalks and green river islands rather than mountains. Go early in the morning or near sunset to avoid the heat.
Extreme Sports
In Bangkok, adrenaline ranges from skyscraper glass floors to Muay Thai rings, canal kayaking and rafting on the River Kwai. Always use licensed operators and drink plenty of water in the heat.
Culture
Bangkok is the heart of Thai culture, with Buddhist temples, royal tradition and lively street rituals. At temples cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and be respectful of the royal family.
